Using student-friendly language and an engaging thematic approach to bring the canon to life, Canon Reloaded invites students to think about what we mean by the literary canon, why it is created and how it might be challenged.
Canon Reloaded:
- Draws on contemporary and world literatures - Challenges and explores our understanding of the canon and why/how a canon is created through texts from a variety of non-English speaking countries.
- Thematic Approach - Provides a fresh and student-friendly frameword to engage middle secondary students in exploring the notion of the canon and how themes such as journeys, love, death and the world we live in recur across a variety of historical moments and the literary movements.
- Explores texts in contexts - illuminates the social, cultural and historical conditions in which texts have been created and the impact these contexts have on the literature that they produce.
- Close focus on language in context - Explores the mechanics of language to analyse the structures and features of texts and how these work together to make meaning.
The student text includes:
- A wide variety of activities encourage students to engage with a variety of language modes, including writing, speaking and creating. Students will benefit from close readings of texts and exploring ideas through their own writing.
- Students are provided with the opportunity to create a variety of different texts, building on the ideas and techniques they have encounted throughout the chapters.
- Extracts and summaries of paired texts are followed by questions and a related visual text activity to allow students to explore how texts are reinterpreted over time.
