Pipi Gari, from Elevala village in Port Moresby, lived through a time of revolutionary change and successfully adapted to the new ways. He witnessed the arrival of Europeans, attended a missionary school and lived through the Second World War. Always a man of the sea, he travelled as a child on several of the great Hiri trading voyages and later became the first Papuan captain of a coastal steamer.
